Middle school is a time of significant growth and change for students—not just academically, but socially, emotionally, and personally. South’s counselors are specially trained professionals who support students through these important years.
Here’s how our counselors help:
Academic Support
South counselors work with students to develop good study habits, time management skills, and goal-setting strategies. They also help with course planning and provide support if a student is struggling academically.
Social & Emotional Development
Middle schoolers often experience a wide range of emotions and social challenges. South counselors provide a safe, confidential space for students to talk about their feelings, friendships, peer pressure, or family concerns. They also offer small group sessions or classroom lessons on topics like empathy, self-esteem, and conflict resolution.
Career and Future Planning
While high school might seem far off, South counselors begin introducing students to career exploration and help them understand how their current choices affect future opportunities.
Crisis and Conflict Support
If a student is facing a crisis—such as bullying, family disruption, or mental health concerns—South counselors are trained to respond appropriately and involve the necessary support services, including referrals to outside professionals when needed.
Partnership with Parents and Teachers
South counselors regularly collaborate with parents and teachers to ensure each student’s needs are being met. They act as advocates for students and help families navigate any academic, behavioral, or emotional concerns that arise.
Our goal as counselors at South is to help every student feel safe, supported, and successful throughout their middle school experience.
